MY PERSPECTIVE FOR CAMDEN & DISTRICT 1

Spaceport

First, we know that the Spaceport has been a pressing topic for Camden for the past couple of years. In the beginning there was a large support for the Spaceport project, because the potential for economic impact, specifically generating jobs and attracting other industries to the area. Now fast forward, 6 years and 8 million dollars later, we have no resolve as to the direction of the project. We don’t know when or if the project will be fully operational nor how much more of our county resources will have to be poured into this initiative. You can only think…What other areas can we invest some of these resources into??? Especially during this time of economic uncertainty when we start to see the effects of this coronavirus both short and long term.
Taxpayers need real answers and clarity concerning this project.

Managing the County Budget

The Spaceport and other recent events are some of the main reasons why I’m very unyielding about managing the county’s budget with integrity and accountability. Our leaders have a fiscal responsibility to take care with the dollars that come into this community. They must answer to the tax payers. We have seen too many cases here lately with mismanagement of funds. From the situation with the missing PSA funds, the independent investigation of the County CFO, to the questionable allocation of spaceport funds. Where is the oversight? We have to place people in office that we can trust to make financial decisions on our behalf and that maintain open communication as often as possible with how they’re spending our funds.

Increasing Opportunities for Employment

Another area I’m concerned with is creating opportunities for viable employment here in Camden. I believe it’s important to work with our education system to make sure our high schoolers are equipped with the soft skills they need to apply and interview for jobs. We also need to be preparing our graduates with life and work skills. We need to continue working closely with the businesses in our area to find out what type of employees they need. We need the local colleges, satellites, and tech schools to offer more opportunities for residents here to gain vocational skills so they can go directly to the work field. We can’t snap our fingers and create a magic fix for this. Some of these concerns our current leadership have been working on for some time. My goal is to stay the course and even increase the intensity of our pursuit in some of the key areas. People can’t receive news about tax dollars being spent on consultants and Uber rides when they work a job daily that doesn’t even afford them the luxury of taking care of their families; or even worst, they can’t find work. Working with the chamber of commerce to find out how we can help in attracting more businesses to the area will strengthen employment opportunities as well.

Infrastructure

Infrastructure for future growth is a priority for me. We need to invest in road repair within neighborhoods in our district. Improving the condition and upkeep of the public parks specifically in District 1. Better drainage of roads and residential areas for times of severe weather is important. We don’t want people to have to paddle out of their yards during rain storms or hurricane season. Holding our Utility companies accountable and liable for the services they provide. Better service provision overall.

Diversity and Inclusion

Diversity and Inclusion is important when we start the conversation of creating opportunities. Personally, I am so enthused about the diversity even of this current election for our district. We have diverse ages, races, and gender being represented for District 1. I believe that speaks to the diversity and forward thinking of our district in large. Not many districts have that same testament. This idea of diversity and inclusion that our district is displaying needs to be represented in every facet of every opportunity for growth within this county; be it through employment opportunities, education, choice of residency, judicially and socially.

Youth Initiatives

A group that’s often overlooked when it comes to thinking of diversity and inclusion is our young people. I talked about ways to create more job opportunities for this targeted group. I would also like to see more recreational outlets for our youth and mentorship opportunities. These are the avenues in which we see more successful and productive youth. Producing more supportive programs for youth yield the outcomes of productive adults in our society.
